A local nurse has been charged with stealing medications prescribed to elderly residents at three nursing homes where she worked in Rome, according to the state Attorney General?s Office.
Erin Marra, 30, was arraigned in Rome City Court on Tuesday on allegations that she took the medications intended for her patients and consumed them herself, either during her shift or after, officials stated. She then allegedly covered up the thefts by indicating on patient records that the stolen medication had been administered.
Marra was working at the following nursing homes when the alleged thefts occurred: Bethany Gardens Skilled Living Center on West Chestnut Street, Betsy Ross Rehabilitation Center on Elsie Street and Colonial Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on Floyd Avenue.
?My office will not allow nurses to use their position and access to prescription narcotics for their own personal gain, especially when it endangers those who are in their care,? said state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. ?Medical professionals have an obligation to properly care for their patients and must be held accountable when they ignore their responsibilities to our most vulnerable citizens in nursing homes.?
Most of the medications were prescribed to be administered on an as-needed basis, and there are no specific reports of any residents being harmed due to Marra?s alleged thefts, Schneiderman said.
Patients were still put at risk, however, Schneiderman said, because the accurate recording of prescribed drugs is used to help gauge the severity of a resident?s pain both before and after the drugs are administered.
Falsifying or omitting information not only causes potential suffering, but may also cause the wrong future diagnosis and treatment, Schneiderman said.
Marra is charged with three counts each of felony first-degree falsifying business records, as well as misdemeanor petit larceny, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, endangering the welfare of an incompetent person or physically disabled person and willful violation of health laws.
If convicted of the felonies, Marra faces up to four years in prison or five years probation.
This case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant Attorney General Paul Berry of the Attorney General?s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.
