Tour de France at a glance - News | FOX Sports on MSN

Stage: The eighth stage reached the high Pyrenees as riders faced two huge climbs at the end: the Col de Pailheres, which winds upward for 9.3 miles at a gradient of 8 percent, and then a shorter but slightly steeper ascent to the AX 3 Domaines ski resort.

Winner: Chris Froome. The British rider is the Tour de France favorite and showed just why. His destructive attack on the final climb left two-time Tour champion Alberto Contador in his wake and other former champions like Andy Schleck and Cadel Evans even further behind.

Yellow Jersey: Froome - and who is going to take it off him? The 28-year-old is already nearly two minutes clear of Contador. Not only does he climb better than Contador, he is much quicker than the Spaniard in time trials. It is hard to see how Contador or the others - like 36-year-old Evans - can make any time up, barring mishap or injury.

Stat of the day: 1 minute, 45 seconds. The amount of time Froome finished the stage ahead of Contador thanks to his brutal acceleration up to AX.

Quote of the day: ''I certainly know the results I'm getting, they're not going to be stripped'' - Froome, when asked if he was riding clean in the fallout from the Lance Armstrong scandal. Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour titles (1999-2005) for doping.

Sunday's stage: Stage 9 is another day of massive climbs of the Pyrenees and Froome has the chance to put even more time on Contador and other contenders. It starts with a not-so-gentle category 2 climb and punishes the weary peloton with four straight category 1 climbs - including Col de Portet-d'Aspet and Col de Peyresourde. One more day to hang in there before Monday's rest day.
