On Sunday, November 18, 2012, members of the Benedict College Women?s Basketball team will volunteer their services to Transitions from 5:00 p.m. ? 6:30 p.m. Benedict College Women?s Head Basketball Coach James Rice and members of the Benedict?s Women?s Basketball Team have been volunteering their time at Transitions Homeless Shelter, 2025 Main Street, Columbia, South Carolina. On Sunday, November 4, 2012, Coach Rice and the team kicked off their, ?Project Homeless Connect: Because We Care initiative?. The team assists with preparing the food, setting up for dinner, and serving those less fortunate in the community; the Lady Tigers primary goal is to assist the staff of Transitions with the distribution of food to the homeless, and let the community know Benedict College cares.

Head Women?s Basketball Coach James Rice says, ?The team knows the importance of assisting in the community and has done so for some time now in various community initiatives?. Benedict College Freshman Forward, Brittney Jackson, said she?s going to school, playing basketball, getting an education, and doing what she loves; at times she felt her life was hard but then she looks around and realizes it?s not that hard at all compared to those she?s assisting at Transitions. The kitchen staff at transitions raved about how the team served 125 people within 20 minutes of distribution! Transitions staff, Robert Pollock indicated that it was record breaking for the young ladies to serve that many dinners in so little time. Alexus Jones, a senior guard on the team stated, ?It?s cool, it?s fun, and it?s a humbling experience, having the opportunity to take part in serving those less fortunate has helped me realize how good my life is as a student athlete at Benedict College. Transitions kitchen staff welcomed the Lady Tigers as they proceeded to help with setup and placement of the food before serving the homeless. The Lady Tigers embraced the experience and were very excited about the outcome. As a result, the most appreciative were the men and women of Transitions community who shared their gratitude towards the Lady Tigers for taking time out to visit.

Transitions is a center that is available to approximately 100-125 people daily, it engages people who are on the street into services by meeting basic needs like showers, laundry, meals, mail and clothing.
