Guardians is a Delight for Families - Arts & Entertainment - The ...

The latest offering from DreamWorks animation is a wonder-filled adventure about the importance of believing. Rise of the Guardians, sumptuously animated and bursting to life in 3D, offers a new take on some old names. Directed by Peter Ramsey and based on William Joyce?s book series, The Guardians of Childhood, the film features Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, Sandman, and Jack Frost as you?ve never seen them.

In addition to delivering toys, Easter eggs, gifts under pillows in exchange for teeth, and sweet dreams, the guardians also protect the children of the world. Their survival also depends on the belief of the children and they help to keep alive wonder, hope, and magic. Each guardian owes their power to the moon, including the sinister Pitch, more commonly known as the Bogeyman. Voiced by Jude Law, Pitch is simultaneously smooth and chilling, ready to rule the world with fear after years of being shunned and confined to the shadows, while the guardians are beloved and believed in.

Alec Baldwin is Santa Claus, who also goes by North, sporting Naughty and Nice tattoos on his forearms. Baldwin is almost unrecognizable in this role, lending a Russian accent, but Santa is still jolly as ever. The no-nonsense Easter Bunny, standing six feet tall, is from Australia, like voice actor Hugh Jackman. Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher) is part hummingbird, bubbly and full of cheer and whimsy. Sandman, made of gold sand, never speaks, but is still quite expressive.

The real star of the film is Jack Frost (Chris Pine), a white haired fourteen-year-old with deep blue eyes. Jack is not a guardian, at least not yet, and has no interest in joining the others. He much prefers to have fun and cause mischief, as well as impromptu snow days. But as the moon chose each of the guardians, it has also chosen Jack to aid the guardians in fighting Pitch. Like the latter, no children believe in him and so he is invisible.

As much a tale of reclaiming good, Rise of the Guardians is also Jack?s story as he struggles to discover the truth about his past and why the moon gave him his powers of snow in the first place. He is also on the path of self-discovery; what is he meant to give to children?

Part of what makes this film so endearing is the fact that it is very much character driven. Each guardian is distinct and full of personality and they are sure to win the hearts of audiences. The character designs are impeccable. DreamWorks has done a superb job in the visual department, showing off crisp and breathtaking animation that soars in 3D.

Rated PG, Rise of the Guardians is enjoyable for the whole family. It is very much a kid's movie; however, it does not resort to crude toilet humor, nor does it pander to children. It is a film that celebrates them and the possibility they hold. It is a film brimming with kid power and wonder, and is sure to make you believe, opening in theaters nationwide today.
