Using the Windows 7 Snippet Tool

Erica Says has a very good tutorial on how to use the built-in capture tool, called snippet, in windows 7.

I used it to show you another really cool thing she has a tutorial about that I?m working on trying to work out.. called 2 Facebook like buttons in one tool.

I can?t get Press This to work on any of my blogs and I?m not sure why.. so this is raw.

Facebook Footer ToolI will figure this out. It looks great on all the sites she designs.? Maybe I need to pay her to add it to mine. :)

You should check them out. They are more than worth your time.

Biologistics: How fast do chemical trains move in living cells?

Jan. 31, 2013 ? The rate of chemical processes in cells is dictated by the speed of movement (diffusion) of molecules needed for a given reaction. Using a versatile method developed at the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, researchers were able to predict for the first time the diffusion coefficients of all proteins in Escherichia coli. The achievement is important not only for biologists and chemists, but also for... transport companies.

Understanding of chemical foundations of life requires knowledge about the rate of chemical reactions in cells. The rates of these reactions depend on how fast the molecules taking part in reactions move (diffuse) in the cytoplasm. Prof. Robert Ho?yst's research team from the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw (IPC PAS) managed to determine -- for the first time -- the diffusion coefficients for virtually all the proteins occurring in Escherichia coli. The method developed by the researchers can also be used for other cells.

The movements of molecules in cells resemble a bit what's going on in railway stations. But the differences are obvious at first glance. "Regular trains leave stations at fixed times, whereas in cells transport processes take place virtually all the time. That's why it doesn't make sense to ask what time does the train with specific molecules leave the station. But it definitely makes sense to ask how fast the train with specific molecules is moving!," explains Prof. Robert Ho?yst (IPC PAS).

Transport efficiency of chemical compounds in cells became inspiring for many transport companies. There's talk of biologistics as modelling vehicle or rail transport by looking up to what's going on inside the cells. Prof. Ho?yst, however, has no illusions about that: "Everyone is delighted, for in cells the transport is so wonderfully resistant to perturbations. They forget, however, that the transport results from random fluctuations, in addition occurring in a small volume, where viscosity depends not only on the medium, but also on the size of the viscosity probe! I wish good luck all those who want to transfer processes occurring in physically so different environment to our roads. Biologistics works excellent, but inside cells only!."

Supported by grants from the National Science Center and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education as well as by programs from the Foundation for Polish Science, the research published in the "Bioinformatics" journal focused on the rate of diffusion of protein molecules in the Escherichia coli cytoplasm.

"The viscosity inside mammalian cells is relatively low, only 60 times higher than that of water. But bacteria are considerably smaller, everything is more crowded. The macroscopic viscosity there is up to 26,000 times higher than that of water. This is really dramatic difference!," concludes Dr Tomasz Kalwarczyk (IPC PAS).

Earlier research of Prof. Ho?yst's team allowed for concluding that viscosity experienced by molecules is not only medium, i.e., solvent dependent, but also depends on the size and shape of molecules. Therefore, in the same medium, molecules differing in shape and size can experience very low viscosity (nanoviscosity) or macroscopic viscosity that is up to several thousand times higher. The previous methods for predicting diffusion coefficients in cytoplasm have not accounted for the effect.

Experimental determination of the diffusion rates of chemical compounds in bacterial cells is both time consuming and difficult. As a result, diffusion coefficients have been measured only for a very limited number of compounds in only some bacterial cells. That's why the researchers from the IPC PAS developed a method for predicting diffusion coefficients for various compounds and media. For that purpose they used their own formulae, accounting for nanoviscosity and macroscopic viscosity, and a few dozens of diffusion coefficients of macromolecules in Escherichia coli taken from the literature. This was a basis for construction of a scale-dependent viscosity reference curve that could be used to determine diffusion coefficients of remaining compounds.

The database constructed at the IPC PAS contains diffusion coefficients for complete proteome of Escherichia coli. It includes over 6000 macromolecules, with about 4300 gene-expressed amino acid chains and their various, often multiple combinations (polymers), created both by the same chains (homomers), and by different amino acids (heteromers).

"Because of easy access to the literature data, we created a database only for molecules occurring in Escherichia coli. Our method could be, however, adapted for virtually any cell and every molecule, for instance for determining diffusion coefficients of sugars in mammalian cells," stresses Dr Marcin Tabaka (IPC PAS).

The Romanticism of Tea Ceremonies - FOOD AND DRINK

|

Have you ever attended a tea ceremony? What was the atmosphere like and how did you feel during the experience? Watching the preparation, pageantry and performance of a tea ceremony, whether it is that of Asian, Indian, British or Russian persuasion, is like engaging in a romantic interlude before reaching the best moment of anticipation and satisfaction. Normally, a tea event is conducted in a tearoom, often set apart in a tea garden, to capture the essence of cleanliness?and quietude. The ambiance is soothing.

The host of the tea ceremony is trained and very intuitive to the tiniest of preparatory and serving details. Movements are carefully orchestrated, very fluid and meticulously performed. Characteristically, the atmosphere is not large, but in a small and intimate setting.

Tea rituals are diverse among many cultures. For example, Asian tea events vary in Japan, China, Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan, Tibet, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand cultures, having specific names according to the season or time of day. The type of event is also based on the tea that is being served. The preparation and serving of tea is an experience beyond the history of the Camellia Sinensis leaf accidentally falling into hot water, thus giving birth to the hot tea revolution.

Instruments used in various tea ceremonies are necessary with each part of the preparation and presentation process. During the ritual, the placement of every tea element is carefully positioned in a specific order. The serving bowls and utensils are cleaned with boiling water that is gently scooped out of a pot or iron teakettle. A wastewater bowl is used to discard water once tea bowls are rinsed.

There is a science to the order and spirit of preparing tea. This process is not rushed, but each moment is savored. Gracefulness and meditation reflect aspects of Zen Buddhism influence when it comes down to the earnestness and romance for the art of tea preparation during a tea ceremony.

Futures slide on meager growth figures

NEW YORK (AP) -- Stock futures slid Wednesday after the government revealed that economic growth in the U.S. shrank in the final quarter of 2012, the first time that has happened in more than three years.

Dow Jones industrial futures fell 12 points to 13,896. The broader S&P futures gave up 2.6 points to 1,502.50. Nasdaq futures slipped 3 points to 2,739.75.

Part of the reason for the slowing growth was the biggest cutback in U.S. defense spending in four decades.

The economy contracted at an annual rate of 0.1 percent in the fourth quarter, according to the Commerce Department. That's a sharp slowdown from the 3.1 percent growth rate in the July-September quarter, and it was worse than most economists had expected.

It immediately raised questions about the strength of the economic recovery going forward, given the tax increases that went into effect this month, and also additional government spending cuts that are on the way.

There were encouraging signs in the Commerce Department report.

There was a growth in business and consumer spending, the latter making up about 70 percent of overall economic growth.

Attention now turns to the Federal Reserve, which wraps up a two-day policy meeting Wednesday and could provide hints about interest rates going forward. While government spending cuts and a slower inventory buildup shaved a total of 2.6 percentage points from growth, both of those numbers tend to be volatile.

And a private survey Wednesday also showed that U.S. businesses increased hiring in January compared with a revised December reading.

Employers added 192,000 jobs in January, according to payroll processor ADP. That's more than December's revised number of 185,000, which had initially been reported at 215,000.

The ADP report is derived from payroll data and tracks total nonfarm private employment each month. The increase in hiring occurred after Congress and the Obama administration reached an agreement on Jan. 1 to avoid sharp tax increases and across-the-board government spending cuts.

Also on Wednesday, Boeing topped most Wall Street expectations for the fourth quarter. More importantly perhaps, the plane maker said that earnings this year will be $5 to $5.20 per share, with revenue of $82 billion to $85 billion. The outlook assumes "no significant financial impact" from the grounding of the 787, the company's most advanced aircraft that has suffered a series of mishaps.

U.S. investigators said Wednesday that they have asked Boeing Co. to provide a full operating history of lithium-ion batteries used in its grounded 787 Dreamliners after Japan's All Nippon Airways revealed it had repeatedly replaced the batteries even before overheating problems surfaced.

Exclusive: CIA nominee had detailed knowledge of "enhanced interrogation techniques"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - John Brennan, President Barack Obama's nominee to head the CIA, had detailed, contemporaneous knowledge of the use of "enhanced interrogation techniques" on captured terrorism suspects during an earlier stint as a top spy agency official, according to multiple sources familiar with official records.

Those records, the sources said, show that Brennan was a regular recipient of CIA message traffic about controversial aspects of the agency's counter-terrorism program after September 2001, including the use of "waterboarding."

How deeply involved Brennan was in the program, and whether he vigorously objected to it at the time, as he has said he did, are likely to be central questions lawmakers raise at his Senate Intelligence Committee confirmation hearing, scheduled for February 7.

After Brennan temporarily left government service in 2005, he publicly disavowed waterboarding, a form of simulated drowning, and other physically painful techniques that are often described as torture.

The official records, which include raw CIA operational message traffic that remains classified, are silent on whether he opposed the techniques while at the spy agency, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Brennan served as deputy executive director of the agency beginning in 2001.

Some former officials familiar with deliberations about the program said they don't recall Brennan voicing objections to the use of harsh interrogation techniques.

But other former officials say Brennan was among agency officials who were uncomfortable with the use of physically coercive tactics, despite the legal opinions that supported their use. He expressed concern, according to these officials, that if details of the program became public, it would be CIA officers who would face criticism, rather than the politicians and lawyers who approved them.

"If John says he expressed reservations about some techniques, I believe him because he's an honest guy," said John McLaughlin, who was deputy CIA director at the time.

"Mr. Brennan had significant concerns and personal objections to many elements of the EIT (enhanced interrogation techniques) program while it was under way," a senior administration official said in response to Reuters' inquiries. "He voiced those objections privately with colleagues at the agency."

The question of whether and to what extent Brennan raised objections will be a focus of his confirmation hearing for Republican and Democratic senators alike.

"I have many questions and concerns about his nomination to be director of the Central Intelligence Agency, especially what role he played in the so-called enhanced interrogation programs while serving at the CIA during the last administration," Senator John McCain, who was tortured during captivity in North Vietnam, said recently.

KNOWLEDGE, BUT NOT RESPONSIBILITY

Under the CIA program, which largely ended before Obama took office, captured militants were detained and interrogated in a network of secret CIA prisons. Sometimes, they were delivered to foreign governments through an extralegal process called "extraordinary rendition."

Three high-ranking al Qaeda leaders, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the September 11 attacks on the United States in 2001, were waterboarded.

Because he was a regular recipient of operational traffic related to the interrogation and detention program, Brennan's name appears in a secret draft of a 6,000-page Senate Intelligence Committee investigative report on the program, sources familiar with that report said. They added, however, that he was cited in passing, not as a significant supervisor or manager of the program.

Brennan, who is now Obama's White House counter-terrorism adviser, played no role in the program's "creation, execution or oversight," the senior Obama administration official said.

"(Brennan) was on hundreds if not thousands of messages a day regarding many different issues but his primary responsibility was ... helping manage the day-to-day running of the agency, to include support, logistics, IT, budget, personnel resources, facilities, IG (Inspector General) recommendations, and the like."

SECOND TRY FOR CIA

This is the second time that Obama has sought to nominate Brennan to head the spy agency, and the second time that questions have arisen about his involvement in enhanced interrogation tactics when he was a CIA official during the administration of former President George W. Bush.

Brennan's candidacy for the top CIA job was derailed over the issue when he was an early front-runner for it after Obama's 2008 election victory.

Brennan withdrew his name from consideration at that time and, in a letter to President-elect Obama, said he had been a "strong opponent" of Bush-era policies, including the Iraq war and coercive interrogation techniques.

Brennan instead became Obama's White House counter-terrorism adviser. Obama issued an executive order banning the techniques shortly after taking office.

Barring unexpected revelations, most political handicappers believe Brennan will be confirmed as CIA director this time.

NBA Predictions: Los Angeles Lakers @ Phoenix Suns

Location: US Airways Center, Phoenix, AZ
NBA Betting Odds: Los Angeles -3
Lakers vs. Suns NBA TV Schedule: ESPN

The Lakers and the Suns are two teams that we think are very similar, and we think that that is going to bite the men in purple and gold in the backside. Both teams fired their head coaches not all that long into the season, and both are still trying to come up with a new identity. The Lakers played last night in a grueling game against the New Orleans Hornets, and that might prove to ultimately hurt as well. Remember that all of these wins that LA has had have come at home, and on the road, the club has been absolutely horrendous this year at 6-13-1 ATS. The home team has won six straight and covered five straight in this series, and that includes earlier this year when the Lakers won at Staples Center 114-102, more or less before the poo hit the fan in Tinseltown and the team started to go in the tank. There really is little justification with recent form to take the Suns on Wednesday night, but after a long stretch of four games in five days, the back to back off days will really help get their heads screwed back on straight again. This is an upset waiting to happen.

Attitudes toward HPV vaccination for boys

Jan. 29, 2013 ? A new Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) study has found that low-income and minority parents/guardians were receptive toward vaccinating boys against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). However, racial/ethnic differences emerged in attitudes regarding school-entry mandates. The findings appear online in the journal Clinical Pediatrics.

Although low-income and minority men have higher rates of oral HPV infection and are more likely to suffer from HPV-related diseases including penile, anal and oral cancers, few studies have examined parental attitudes after the HPV vaccine was approved for males in 2009.

This study aimed to provide an in-depth understanding of how low-income and minority parents view HPV vaccination for boys using open-ended interview questions. The analysis was based on the Health Belief Model which measures perceived severity, susceptibility, benefits and barriers.

Researchers led by corresponding author, Rebecca Perkins, MD, MSc, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at BUSM, interviewed 120 parents and legal guardians of boys age 11 to 17 who accompanied them for physician visits between December 2011-2012. All subjects were read a short educational paragraph explaining HPV and HPV vaccination prior to answering questions.

Perceiving the severe consequences of being exposed to HPV, most parents/guardians saw more benefits than barriers to vaccinating boys against HPV. Researchers found the most prominent barrier to vaccination was lack of information about the long-term efficacy and safety of the vaccine, specifically for males.

"This study indicates that most parents would accept HPV vaccination for their sons just as readily as for daughters. Future research should explore the effects of the 2012 recommendations for routine vaccination for males on parental attitudes and uptake of HPV vaccination among both sexes," said Perkins.

Although race/ethnicity revealed no differences in parent/guardians' views towards vaccinating boys, minority study participants were more likely than white participants to support school-entry mandates, requiring children to receive the HPV vaccine.

Results from this study suggest that low-income and minority parents/guardians are inclined to accept HPV vaccination for boys with the aim of protecting them from cancer and other diseases, but would like more information specifically related to HPV in males. More African-American (73 percent) and Latino (86 percent) than Caucasian (44 percent) participants supported school-entry mandates, but all feel that requirements should apply to both genders.

No-Nonsense Stress Relief (Part 1) | Stress Relief -- by Doc Orman

No-Nonsense Stress Relief Part 1It has been more than 16 months now since this blog was first launched on September 12, 2011.?

During this time span, 216 posts have been created and published here, and this is now my 217th entry.

I thought it might be worthwhile, at this point, to look back and review what value this blog offers to its readers.

Not Your Typical Stress Relief Blog

From the outset, I have strived to present fresh, new insights about stress that are not available on most other stress relief blogs.?? I have stayed absolutely true to the purpose I first announced in my second post (09/14/2011) which you can revisit by clicking the link below:

http://ormanstressrelief.com/purpose-of-this-stress-relief-blog/

In short, this blog has been?and will continue to be?based on a new and different way of thinking about stress as a uniquely human experience. If you look back at any of the 216 posts already published here, you will notice that they differ from most other self-help advice about stress in the following key ways:

  • They DON?T try to offer you quick-fix tips or other simplistic to-do?s to help reduce your stress.
  • They DON?T encourage you to exercise, meditate, adopt daily relaxation practices, or use any other traditional stress management techniques.
  • ?Instead, they expose common myths and misconceptions about stress and help you to think about stress more correctly and much more powerfully.
  • They also help you to understand why managing stress is not your best coping option.

It?s All About Causes

The primary reason why managing stress is not your best coping option is because, with only a few exceptions, most stress management strategies are aimed at helping you to control just the symptoms of your stressful problems in life?and that?s as far as they go.? The almost never help you recognize and then deal with the underlying causes of your day-to-day difficulties.

That?s why a stress relief blog such as this is so valuable?and so badly needed.

In many of the 216 previous posts, I have tried to shed light on some of the internal causes of stress in our lives.? Since these internal causes consist of faulty thought patterns and behavior patterns that exist within us, they are often hidden from our view when we attempt to understand what might be causing our stress to occur.

Mostly, we tend to focus on external causes, and this is rub.? This is why we tend to struggle with recurring types of stress in our lives when we actually have the power within us to eliminate most of them.

I?ll have more to say about this natural stress-reducing skill, which we all possess, in my nexxt two new posts for this week.? So please stay tuned.

Possible link between electronic billboards and highway crashes

Jan. 29, 2013 ? A new study published in Traffic Injury Prevention has found that drivers take more and longer glances at electronic billboards than regular signs, indicating a possible link between these digital signs and highway crashes.

Eye-grabbing, electronic signs replacing traditional billboards along highways are meant to attract and keep the attention of passersby with bright colors and constantly changing messages. The ramifications for traffic safety have been long debated, and this study provides scientific evidence previously lacking.

The study used sophisticated eye-tracking devices to monitor the visual behaviors of experienced drivers passing traditional and electronic billboards during day and night conditions. The experimental route was a 40km long stretch of a three-lane motorway with heavy traffic running through central Stockholm, Sweden.

The electronic billboards attracted significantly more visual attention than the other traffic signs included in the study. Dwell times were longer, the visual time sharing intensity was higher, very long single glances were more frequent, and the number of fixations were greater for the electronic billboards. Although whether the electronic billboards constitute a traffic safety hazard cannot be answered conclusively based on the present data, these findings do validate existing concerns about the relationship between electronic billboards and higher crash risks.

Activists cautiously welcome immigration reform push

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Proposed changes to immigration law unveiled on Monday could be the answer to the prayers of illegal immigrants like Maria Duran, but she is waiting to see the details.

A bipartisan group of Republican and Democrat senators announced "tough but fair" steps that they hoped could be passed by Congress this year to give 11 million illegal immigrants a chance to eventually become American citizens.

Activists like Duran, who sat up all night with others at a prayer vigil for immigration reform outside the capitol building in Phoenix, Arizona, were pleased but cautious.

"It's the best moment for immigration reform in years, but we need to see more details," said the 50-year-old homemaker, who left Mexico to live in the United States 28 years ago, but still does not have legal status.

The proposed steps are part of the first concerted drive for comprehensive immigration reform since a similar overhaul was defeated by Republicans in Congress in 2007.

It would offer probationary legal status to immigrants who register with the government and pay a fine and any back taxes.

They will also have to learn English, continue to pay taxes and demonstrate a work history in the United States to apply for legal permanent residency.

However, many of the details still need to be worked out and the proposal also seeks to ensure as a first step that the porous border with Mexico is secure and that foreigners in the United States temporarily return home when their visas expire.

Some activists were encouraged by the level of bipartisan support from the four Democrat and four Republican senators who put forward the proposal. They include Charles Schumer, a New York Democrat, and John McCain, a veteran Arizona Republican.

But they also worried that the proposal made tightening enforcement - including adding agents and surveillance systems to the southwestern border - a precondition for all other measures in the package.

"It's really heavy on enforcement. That has always been one of the wedge issues in the community for activists," said Gaby Pacheco, a campaigner in Florida who was brought to the United States from Ecuador at the age of eight.

While the government's own figures showed arrests on the southwest border at a 40-year low in 2011 and deportations at a record high, Pacheco said, "I don't think Republicans are ever going to be satisfied with enforcement measures."

'AMNESTY' OR 'EARNESTY'?

For Juana Garcia, a 27-year-old illegal immigrant from Mexico working in agriculture, reform could ease the fear she and her husband have of deportation and being separated from their five children - all of whom were born in the United States and therefore have citizenship.

The pair are seasonal workers who drive to Wisconsin to work the crops there before returning to Florida's strawberry fields and orange groves - all the while worried that they will be pulled over for a traffic stop and detained.

Garcia, speaking in Spanish, said she has no problem with provisions requiring immigrants to pay fines and back taxes before getting a green card. But she said that while immigrants want to learn English, they may need help finding time or child care to attend classes after laboring in the fields all day.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, a Republican whose support for her state's tough crackdown on illegal immigrants in 2010 made her a major White House antagonist on the issue, gave the proposal a cautious welcome.

"I am pleased that there is expressed recognition of what we have been saying in Arizona: immigration reform will not succeed unless and until we have achieved effective border security," Brewer said in a statement.

However, it met with a decidedly mixed response from other Republican leaders nationally, who said that while they supported some kind of immigration overhaul, they were unclear if this was the right one.

"My understanding is it's basically just saying that we're going to give everybody amnesty," said Steve Munisteri, chairman of the Republican Party of Texas.

"But we do need immigration reform that recognizes the fact that we have a lot of people already here, that are necessary to be here, that are hard-working, law-abiding people that would add to the country," he added. "We should figure out a way for those people to have a way to stay."

Some others in the party, which lost Hispanic votes in the November election that gave President Barack Obama a second term, saw support for the measure as way of building bridges to Latinos, who are the country's fastest-growing ethnic group.

"There's no question about it. We've got to deliver a better message to Hispanics and immigrants ... a segment of people we lost badly," said Chad Connelly, chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party, adding that legislation could find support if it involved better border security and assimilation measures.

"I've heard some people say this is more like 'earnesty' than 'amnesty. 'Earnesty,' as in earning their way to citizenship," he added.

Cultural evolution changes bird song

Jan. 29, 2013 ? Thanks to cultural evolution, male Savannah sparrows are changing their tune, partly to attract "the ladies."

According to a study of more than 30 years of Savannah sparrows recordings, the birds are singing distinctly different songs today than their ancestors did 30 years ago -- changes passed along generation to generation, according to a new study by University of Guelph researchers.

Integrative biology professors Ryan Norris and Amy Newman, in collaboration with researchers at Bowdoin College and Williams College in the U.S., analyzed the songs of male Savannah sparrows (Passerculus sandwichiensis) recorded over three decades, and found that the songs had changed distinctly from 1980 to 2011.

"The change is the result of cultural transmission of different song elements through many generations," said Norris.

Norris added that the change in tune resembles changes in word choice and language among humans.

"If you listen to how people used to talk in the 1890s and how we talk today, you would notice major differences, and this is the result of shifts in culture or the popularity of certain forms," he said. "The change in sparrow songs over time has occurred much the same way"

The sparrows, which live on Kent Island, N.B., in the Bay of Fundy, can generally sing only one song type that consists of several parts. Male sparrows learn that song early in their first year and continue to sing the same tune for the rest of their lives.

"Young male sparrows learn their songs from the birds around them," said Norris. "It may be their fathers, or it could be other older male birds that live nearby."

Each male sparrow has his own unique sound, added Newman.

"While the island's sparrows all sing a characteristic 'savannah sparrow song,' with the same verses and sound similar, there are distinct differences between each bird," she said. "Essentially, it is like karaoke versions of popular songs. It is the rise and fall in popular cover versions that has changed over time."

The research team found that, in general, each song has three primary elements. The first identifies the bird as a Savannah sparrow, the second identifies which individual is singing, and the third component is used by females to assess males.

Using sonograms recorded from singing males each breeding season, the researchers determined that, while the introductory notes had stayed generally consistent for the last 30 years, the sparrows had added a series of clicks to the middle of their songs. The birds had also changed the ending trill: once long and high-frequency, it is now shorter and low-frequency.

"We found that the ending trill of the song has become shorter, likely because female sparrows preferred this, because males with shorter trills had higher reproductive success," Norris said.

Kent Island has been home to the Bowdoin Scientific Station since it was donated by J. Sterling Rockefeller in 1932, and the birds have been recorded since the 1980s. Individual birds are also monitored throughout their lifetime.

"We know the identity and history of every single sparrow in the study population" said Norris, who has led the project with Newman since 2009. "To have 30 years of recordings is very rare, and it was definitely surprising to see such drastic changes."

LONDON (AP) ? Markets were relatively becalmed Tuesday for the second day running as investors awaited key data on the U.S. economy that could indicate whether the optimistic start to the year will continue.

Many stock indexes around the world have hit multi-year highs and the Dow Jones industrial average is not far off its all-time peak, achieved in 2007 just before the financial crisis started baring its teeth.

One of the reasons why markets have enjoyed such a strong start to the year is optimism over the U.S. economy. Over the coming days, investors will be inundated with a raft of figures, culminating on Friday with the monthly nonfarm payrolls report for January. The payrolls figures often provide the markets direction for a week or two after their release.

In the run-up to that statement, markets around the world have so far traded this week in fairly narrow ranges, particularly in Europe and the U.S. In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 0.2 percent at 6,304 while Germany's DAX fell 0.1 percent to 7,826. The CAC-40 in France was 0.2 percent lower at 3,774.

There's a lot to get through before Friday, though, most notably on Wednesday when the U.S. Federal Reserve concludes its latest two-day policy meeting. At their last meeting, there were signs that some rate-setters were poised to bring an end to the era of super-loose monetary policy.

"The Fed statement tomorrow is likely to be the most eagerly anticipated news of the week," said Rebecca O'Keeffe, head of investment at Interactive Investor.

Wall Street was poised for modest losses at the open Tuesday, with both Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures down 0.1 percent.

The main point of interest later Tuesday may be the monthly U.S. consumer confidence report from the Conference Board ? particularly as the recent budget agreement between the White House and Congress has led to some tax rises.

U.S. earnings statements continue, with more than one-fifth of the companies in the S&P 500 reporting this week. Ford and Amazon are due to report Tuesday.

"Traders' resolve to keep building out this rally certainly has the potential to be tested yet again," said Fawad Razaqzada, market strategist at GFT Markets.

Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.4 percent to 10,866.72 but Hong Kong's Hang Seng slipped less than 0.1 percent to 23,655.17.

Japanese banks surged on expectations they will beat earnings estimates for fiscal 2012, the Nikkei newspaper reported. Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group advanced 3.8 percent. Mizuho Financial Group gained 2.9 percent and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group rose 4.4 percent.

It was fairly quiet in other financial markets too, with the euro 0.1 percent lower at $1.3441 and the dollar flat at 90.51 yen.

In the oil markets, a barrel of benchmark New York crude was 15 cents higher at $96.58.

Google pledges fight over government access to users' email

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Google will lobby Washington in 2013 to make it harder for law enforcement authorities to gain access to emails and other digital messages.

In a blog post on Monday, linked to Data Privacy Day, Google's chief legal officer, David Drummond, said the tech giant, in coalition with many other powerful tech companies, will try to convince Congress to update a 1986 privacy protection law.

He cited data showing that government requests for Google's user data increased more than 70 percent since 2009.

In 2012, Google said, it received 16,407 requests for user data affecting 31,072 users or accounts, more than half of them accompanied by a subpoena.

"We're a law-abiding company, and we don't want our services to be used in harmful ways. But it's just as important that laws protect you against overly broad requests for your personal information," Drummond said in the post.

The U.S. Electronic Communications Privacy Act, passed in the early days of the Internet, does not require government investigators to have a search warrant when requesting access to old emails and messages that are stored online, providing less protection for them than, say, letters stored in a desk drawer or even messages saved on a computer's hard drive.

The current system also makes complex distinctions, many disputed in courts, between emails saved as drafts online, in transit, unopened or opened. Some of them are to be released with subpoenas, which have a lower threshold than search warrants as they often do not involve a judge.

A warrant is generally approved by a judge if investigators have "probable cause" to believe that their search is likely to turn up information related to a crime.

Google, Microsoft Corp, Yahoo and popular social media site Twitter - among others - have resisted turning over customer data.

They have put in place policies, based on the constitutional protection from unreasonable searches, that require search warrants for access to content of private communications.

Privacy activists say the outdated law should be reformed to extend the constitutional right to privacy online, but legislation limiting government requests will not face an easy road.

Last year, Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, introduced a bill that would have updated the current law.

It triggered a wave of concerns from the police and FBI that new restrictions would impede crime investigations and possibly endanger victims.

"After three decades, it is essential that Congress update ECPA to ensure that this critical law keeps pace with new technologies and the way Americans use and store email today," Leahy said in a statement on Monday.

His privacy legislation died in Congress last year after his counterpart in the House of Representatives, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, a Republican, drafted another version of that bill, which also tackled other issues but stripped out privacy reform language.

Last year, Goodlatte said he was willing to consider the privacy law reform, but that the timeline then was too short for a "thorough examination."

Leahy has now included the change of privacy laws as one of his top priorities this year.

Surviving band member leads police to bodies

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) ? The Colombian-style music group was playing at a ranch in northern Mexico when at least 10 gunmen entered the warehouse where the private party was being held and forced them and several crew members into waiting vehicles, a survivor of the attack told authorities.

Nuevo Leon state security spokesman Jorge Domene said the survivor, a member of the Kombo Kolombia band, told police the 18 were blindfolded and driven on dirt roads until they stopped. He then heard the assailants ask fellow band members if they belonged to a drug cartel, shots were fired and the bodies were dumped into a well.

Domene said the survivor, who is being protected by soldiers, was able to reach a nearby ranch and get help. He wouldn't give details on how the man was able to escape.

The man later led authorities to the well where searchers found several bodies, Domene said.

Domene said four bodies first pulled from the well on Sunday have been identified by their relatives, including a Colombian citizen who played the keyboard. Three of them were wearing matching T-shirt with the name of the band.

"The search will continue ... to see how many more bodies may be hidden there," he said.

By Monday afternoon, searchers had pulled 12 bodies from the well along a dirt road in the town of Mina, about 140 miles (225 kilometers) from Laredo, Texas, Domene said.

The bodies recovered showed signs of torture, said a forensic official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment publicly on the case.

It was hard to determine how many more bodies were submersed in the water, he said.

Authorities initially said 16 members of the band Kombo Kolombia and four crew members were reported missing early Friday after playing at a private party attended by about 50 people and held at a ranch called La Carreta, or The Wagon, in the town of Hidalgo north of Monterrey.

But Domene said Monday 18 band members had gone missing. He didn't say how many were crew members and how many were musicians.

The party guests are being questioned and police have yet to determine a motive in the killings, Domene said.

Nuevo Leon state, on the border with Texas, has been the scene of a turf battle between members of the Gulf drug cartel and the Zetas drug gang. The Zetas were hit men for the Gulf cartel until they split in 2010, unleashing their bloody war.

People living near the ranch in Hidalgo reported hearing gunshots at about 4 a.m. Friday, followed by the sound of vehicles speeding away, said a separate source with the Nuevo Leon State Investigative Agency. He also spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to be quoted by the news media.

The officials added that gunfire is common in the area and said investigators found spent bullets nearby.

Relatives filed a missing persons report on Friday after losing cellular phone contact with the musicians. When they went to the ranch to investigate, they found the band members' vehicles still parked outside.

Kombo Kolombia has played a Colombian style of music known as vallenato, which is popular in working class neighborhood in the city of Monterrey and other parts of Nuevo Leon state. Most of the group's musicians were from the area, except for the keyboard player who is Colombian and had Mexican residency, Domene said.

The band regularly played at bars in downtown Monterrey on the weekend. At least two of the bars where they had played had been attacked by gunmen.

It was Mexico's largest single kidnapping since 20 tourists from the western state of Michoacan were abducted in Acapulco in 2010. Most of their bodies were found a month later in a mass grave. Authorities said the tourists were mistaken for cartel members.

Members of other musical groups have been murdered in Mexico in recent years, usually groups that perform "narcocorridos" that celebrate the exploits of drug traffickers. But Kombo Kolombia did not play that type of music, and its lyrics were about love and heartbreak and did not deal with violence or drug trafficking.

But singers of drug exploits are not the only musicians targeted, said Elijah Wald, author of the book, "Narcocorrido: A Journey into the Music of Drugs, Guns and Guerrillas."

"There is really not correlation. Drug guys hire people to play for their parties and they hire whatever is happening," he said. "Sergio Gomez, the single-most famous singer killed from K-Paz de la Sierra, his big hit was a version of 'Jambalaya.'"

Gomez was kidnapped and found strangled and tortured in 2007 in the western state of Michoacan, a day after Zayda Pena of the group Zayda and the Guilty Ones was shot in a hospital while recovering from a separate bullet wound in the border town of Matamoros, across from Brownsville, Texas.

Valentin Elizalde, "El Gallo de Oro," was shot to death along with his manager and driver in 2006 following a performance in Reynosa, across the border from McAllen, Texas. Norteno singer Sergio Vega was shot dead in a northern state of Sinaloa in 2010.

"A lot of people are being killed because they're in the wrong place at the wrong time and musicians are some of the people on that list," Wald said.

7 Triggers for Psychological Optimization of Websites | Internet ...

Do you know WHY your website needs to be psychologically optimized? When we optimize for psychology, sales go up, interaction & retention are enhanced and return visitors increase. If you?re doing e-commerce then you need every opportunity to increase your online sales. If your website is informational, you need people to remember you as a reference. If your website?s purpose is for education it?s important to stimulate the mind of the critical thinker.

When considering your websites psychology, consider your purpose. There is no ?one size fits all? approach.

So let?s break website psychology down.

Color Psychology

Colors affect every decision we make, whether we know it or not. How we perceive a product, person or place is directly associated with the colors involved. Consciously or sub-consciously, colors play a role in our decisions. Colors effect our mood ? have you ever walked into a room that was dark and uncomfortable? It makes you want to leave immediately. This holds true with your website as well. If a vistor doesn?t feel comfortable, they will leave.

So it?s easy, you just have to find what colors mean what and put them in the design, Right? Not that easy?

Let?s use Orange as an example. Orange encourages ambition, fun times and warm energy, but when applied as a sales tool it makes products more attractive and look more affordable. If you have a call to action in Orange it will seem much more affordable & inviting then a call to action in Gold, which represents worth, loyalty and prestige. (Unless that?s what you?re going for)

All to often is the wrong color chosen for a web site. A color should be decided on based upon two key starting points. 1. Your target demographic 2. Your product/service.
If you have an existing logo, the color of the logo must be taken into consideration. The existing color must be incorporated with the correct density in the design, while still maintaining a balance with corresponding colors. (Which is another consideration you must address).

Color psychology is powerful when done correctly. It?s not an accident that Campbell?s soup has used the same colors continuously throughout their products life. I even bet when I mentioned that product you had a visual of the label pop up in you mind.

What about Coke, Pepsi, Google, 7UP, Nike, RedBull, Reese?s. These colors all play a role in how we perceive them.

So, once we have the colors, now what? What triggers us?

Psychological Triggers

We develop a Psycho-graphic profile which allows us to chose the color schemes. Psychological triggers on the other hand are used when developing our sales funnels in which we want those profiles to follow. It works both consciously or subconsciously, the proper use and placement of triggers will lead a customer through your website to the point of purchase.

If you recall the beginning of this document, I asked you ?Why does you website need to be psychologically optimized?? Do you know why I asked you that? Because humans are curious by nature. Asking ?why? stirs our curiosity stick so we delve deeper into a sites content. Searching for the answer.

?

The top 7 Psychological Triggers we can use are:

  1. BE SPECIFIC ? It?s important to be as specific as possible. Why! Because it make your information more believable and credible.
  2. CURIOSITY ? We use this to lure viewers into content. It?s helps them discover the answer through their own efforts, even though we are not hiding anything from them to begin with.
  3. REASON WHY ? Why should people listen to you? Why should consumers buy from you? Why is what you?re offering going to make their life better?
  4. SCARCITY ? Simply put: we are more driven by the thought of
loosing something then by the thought of gaining something. ?Limited time offer?, ?Limited chances to win?, ?Buy before 4:00pm and win a fancy hat?
  5. FEAR ? Fear is a powerful trigger & controls the majority of our actions. The fear of Y2K had people frantically storing food, finding shelter and preparing for the end of the world.
  6. ENTHUSIASM ? Having positive energy when selling your product/service makes all the difference in the world. No one buys from a dull depressed pitch. The transfer of energy is crucial for consumers to believe in what they are committing to.
  7. TELLING THE TRUTH ? Sincere honesty gains you respect and credibility. All lies surface in time, but the truth will give you a concrete foundation that builds a relationship. People appreciate honesty, even when it?s not in their favor.
  8. Psychological optimization is just another key role that plays into the overall efforts put into web development. These tiny, yet large, decisions can mean the difference between profits and losses. We approach every website with these factors in mind. We go through the necessary research to properly evaluate who is visiting the site and how they will navigate through the site to arrive at a call to action. Each website is approach differently depending on it?s unique needs and how they pertain to the visitors.

ARGUS drone spots you from 20,000 feet ? with camera-phone sensors

1 hr.

Paranoid delusions about black helicopters hovering over an area will soon be out of date: The latest scary spy apparatus lives 20,000 feet up, turning 30 or more square miles into live video sharp?enough to spot individual people walking around.

The system is called ARGUS, after the 100-eyed god of Greek myth, and fittingly, it works by hooking together hundreds of inexpensive image sensors like those found in mobile phones.?The non-classified parts were featured last week in an episode of the PBS show "Nova"?all about drones and surveillance (the ARGUS segment starts at the half-hour mark).

ARGUS has appeared in earlier reports, but in a much less detailed fashion. The "Nova"?program shows how it might actually appear in action.

Yiannis Antoniades of BAE Systems, the British company that makes the ARGUS system (with help and funding from DARPA), told PBS that although BAE?would have liked to design a whole new sensor, it was cheaper and more practical to use an array of smaller, off-the-shelf ones.

The current version uses 368 five-megapixel sensors, for a total of 1.8 gigapixels. But unlike other gigapixel camera systems, this one doesn't record still images ? it produces video. That means that from four miles up, it can watch a?roughly circular area up to six miles wide, tracking every car and person in real time.

The amount of data produced by the system is, naturally, immense, around 6?petabytes per day according to earlier reports.

ARGUS has yet to be deployed, although there were plans to send three to Afghanistan onboard a helicopter-like hovering unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)?called the Hummingbird, now defunct. The future of the system?is, for now, classified.

Caterpillar sets cautious tone for year after low profit

(Reuters) - Caterpillar Inc , the world's largest maker of construction equipment, posted a 55 percent drop in quarterly profit on Monday and set a cautious tone for the year, citing weak demand and oversupply.

Executives at the company, which last year slashed production to reduce inventory, balanced their optimism on recent improvements in U.S. housing starts with concern about China's slowing growth, the U.S. deficit and eurozone instability.

However, investors took heart in Caterpillar's 2013 profit forecast of $7 to $9 per share, lifting the stock 1.8 percent in afternoon trading.

Of the 25 analysts in the United States, Canada, Britain and South Korea who cover Caterpillar's stock, seven had cut 2013 profit estimates in the past month, with the lowest at $7.63 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

High inventory remains a short-term challenge for the Peoria, Illinois-based company. While Caterpillar cut its equipment inventory glut by $2 billion sequentially in the fourth quarter, levels remain $1 billion higher than a year ago.

Caterpillar still has an oversupply of products in China, and executives said they hope to sell some of it by June.

Quarterly results were hit by a charge of 87 cents per share after the company discovered accounting fraud at a Chinese coal mining supplier it bought last year.

In a somber note on the global economy, Caterpillar said the "most significant favorable factor" for 2013 profit will be the absence of the ERA accounting fraud writedown, not increased demand for its machines.

"We're encouraged by recent improvements in economic indicators, but remain cautious," Caterpillar Chief Executive Doug Oberhelman said on Monday.

For the fourth quarter, Caterpillar posted net income of $697 million, or $1.04 per share, compared with $1.55 billion, or $2.32 per share, in the year-ago quarter.

Excluding one-time items, the company earned $1.46 per share. Analysts had expected $1.69.

Caterpillar's operating margin fell to 6.5 percent from an all-time high of 15.8 percent in the third quarter of 2012.

Revenue fell 7 percent to $16.08 billion. Analysts had expected revenue of $16.12 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

CHINA FRAUD

Caterpillar closed the purchase of ERA Mining Machinery Ltd and its subsidiary Siwei, China's fourth-largest maker of hydraulic coal mine roof supports, last June for $653.4 million (HK$5.06 billion).

After the deal closed, Caterpillar found that physical inventory did not match accounting statements, a discovery that led to the charge. The case has opened questions about Caterpillar's research into ERA before the deal, as well as the adequacy of its auditors.

Caterpillar does not expect the fraud to harm its 2013 profit, but it will hinder the company's expansion into China, the world's largest coal producer.

"I recognize the decision to acquire (ERA) happened on my watch and the buck stops at my desk," Oberhelman said on a call with investors. "I am accountable for that acquisition."

Oberhelman, CEO since 2010, said Caterpillar is "considering all options to recover our losses and hold those responsible accountable for their wrongdoing."

Emory Williams, the chairman of ERA when the Caterpillar deal closed, ended days of silence on Monday, saying in a statement issued before the Caterpillar earnings statement that he was "dismayed" by the accounting charge Caterpillar was taking.

Williams said nothing about the accusation of accounting misconduct in his statement.

Citigroup Inc and law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP served as financial and legal advisers to Caterpillar on the transaction. Blackstone and DLA Piper acted as ERA's financial and legal advisers.

A source directly involved with the Caterpillar deal previously told Reuters that RSM Nelson Wheeler was ERA's auditor, while Deloitte and Ernst & Young acted on Caterpillar's side.

None of the auditors has commented.

BlackBerry Z10 priced at ?480 sim-free by purported Carphone Warehouse database leak (update)

BlackBerry Z10 purportedly hits Carphone Warehouse database, 480 unlocked

With all the BlackBerry 10 leaks as of late, it seems inevitable that pricing info would get ousted in the lead up to January 30th. Thanks to an anonymous tipster, it appears that the the sim-free version of RIM's Z10 will cost UKers a cool £480 at Carphone Warehouse (for perspective, a 16GB iPhone 5 would run you just roughly £30 more). The leak comes from what's said to be a snapshot of the company's internal database, listing the white variant. The attached BLAZ10WHI model number also syncs up nicely with the previous slip from the retailer. At this rate, not much is going to be left to the imagination when RIM officially unveils its devices come Monday -- who likes surprises anyway, right?

Update: We've updated the post to reflect that the phone was touted to us as "sim-free," specifically.
